Carol Swain was born in 1962 in London as daughter of an architect. She has been originally trained as a painter and studied at the North Staffordshire Polytechnic, where she graduated with a B.A.. Her main graphic influence is Jerry Moriarty

Swain began creating comics with her self-published 'Way Out Strips' in 1988. Her first graphic novel, 'Invasion of the Mind Sappers', appeared at Fantagraphics in 1996. Her second graphic novel, 'Foodboy', was also published by Fantagraphics. Many of Swain's stories are set in Wales, and are grounded in autobiography. Carol Swain lives and works in London.
