comic art by Yumiko Oshima

Yumiko Oshima made her debut in the world of comics in 1968, with the short story 'Pora no Namida'. It was a melodramatic story which was typical for the genre of Japanese girl's comics at that time. In 1970, Oshima gained the attention of critics with 'Tanjou' ('Birth'), a story of a teenage girl's pregnancy. Still, Oshima is best remembered for her only multi-volume work 'Wata no Kunihoshi' ('A Star over the Cotton Country'), which tells the story of Chibi, a kitten who believes she will one day grow up to be a human being. For 'Wata no Kunihoshi', Oshima was awarded the Kodansha Comic Award in 1979. Other works by Yumiko Oshima include 'Shigatsu Kaidan', 'Mainichi Ga Natsu Yashumi' and 'Akihiko Kaku Katariki'.
