Dan Russell was born in New South Wales, Australia in 1906. He was the brother of Jim Russell and his father, a plumber, was killed in 1915. Dan Russell studied art in evening class, working by day as a clerk. Eventually, he got a job as a commercial artist in advertising. After that, he was employed by Frank Johnson Publications, where he made short comic stories, such as 'Terry Lawson', 'Val Blake, Ventriloquist', 'Wanda Dare' and 'Jimmy Dale'.
