Don Celes, by Olmo
Luis del Olmo is a cartoonist and a journalist from Bilbao mainly known as the creator of 'Don Celes'. This silent daily comic strip first appeared in La Gaceta del Norte in October 1945, when Olmo was asked to think up a new series similar to those which were popular in foreign newspapers. Don Celes played a great variety of roles in the series. Depending on the day he could be a policeman or a thief, an indignant man or a rogue, but he was always dogged by misfortune.

In april 1969 'Don Celes' changed newspapers and from then on it was published in El Correo Español-El Pueblo Vasco. Other Spanish newspapers also acquired the strip. In addition, the Danish agency Copenhague Press Illustrations Bureau delivered it to other countries, especially Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany. The ongoing series has run for more than sixty years. Annual compilations of the strip were regularly issued for more than twenty years. After that the few compilations were only occasional. As a journalist, Olmo has written some books about Bilbao and thousands of articles.
