Shigeru Mizuki studied fine arts in Musashino before he lost his left arm in a bombing in New Guinea during World War II. In 1957, he started creating comics. At first specializing in horror stories featuring characters for Japanese folktales, Mizuki created such comics as 'Rocket Man', 'Yurei Ikka' and 'Kappa no Sanpei', published in rental-library books and paper theatres. His most famous creation is 'Hakaba no Kitarô', or 'Ghost Family'. This series about a little ghost appeared from 1965 to 1969 in Shônen Magazine, and has been the subject of several television adaptations. In 1973, his anti-militaristic comic 'Sôin Gyokusai Seyo' appeared.
