Born in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Marcelo Lelis went to work for the Jornal Diário de Montes Claros as illustrator, cartoonist and assistant reporter in 1986. In 1989, he moved over to Jornal do Norte, where he also did cartoons and illustrations. Invited by his father, José Alferes, he settled in Belo Horizonte in 1992. There, he continued to work as illustrator-cartoonist, until he began a collaboration with Folha de São Paulo in 1997. He has won several prizes over the years, and has participated in several expositions. In 2001, he published his first comics book, 'Saino a Percurá'.
