'Rocky & Bullwinkle'.
Cartoonist and filmmaker Al Kilgore studied at the Art Career School. He drew the syndicated 'Rocky & Bullwinkle' daily and Sunday strip for Bell-McClure Syndicate between July 1962 and September 1965, based on Jay Ward's TV show 'Rocky & Bullwinkle'. Kilgore received complete creative freedom and was therefore able to capture the spirit of the original series. Mel Crawford also provided artwork for the comic series. Nevertheless, in 1965 Ward canceled the comic because he felt the syndicate didn't give it enough promotion. Kilgore always regarded the 'Rocky & Bullwinkle' his favorite comic strip he ever worked on. A comic book compilation was considered by Simon & Schuster at the time, but they wanted the recurring villain Boris Badenov to be removed, since they feared he might offend Russian audiences in a time when U.S.-Russian diplomatic relations had improved. This effectively canceled the book publishing deal.
Kilgore was additionally the leading artist for Dell and Gold Key's 'Rocky and His Friends', 'Bullwinkle Mother Moose Nursery Pomes' and 'Bullwinkle and Rocky' comic books. In 1969, he also made a syndicated feature called 'TV Star Screen'. Kilgore is the founding member of The Sons of the Desert, the Laurel and Hardy appreciation society.
