W. G. van de Hulst Jr.

Willem Gerrit van de Hulst Jr., son of the famous children's book writer Willem Gerrit van de Hulst, was born in Utrecht and studied at the Art Academy in Amsterdam between 1936 and 1940. When he was still very young, he was already drawing comics, and his father asked him to illustrate his books. He made his debut in 1933 with 'Een Muis, in dit Huis?'. A year later, the father and son team started the famous and very popular series 'Inde Soete Suikerbol', which was published in newspaper De Standaard.

From the beginning of World War II until 1952, Willem Gerrit van de Hulst jr. roamed The Netherlands in an atelier studio boat. In this period, he made another three comics: 'In de Goude Gaper' (1947, from text by his father), 'De Pruikenmaker en de Prins' (1948, again from text by his father) and 'Het Paleis met de Zeven Torens' (from text by W. Holwerda, unfinished).

Apart from illustrating books by his father and other writers, Willem Gerrit van de Hulst jr. created a number of children's books himself. Since the early 1970s, he devoted himself completely to painting.
