With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Nicole Hollander left school expecting to become a painter. Instead, she worked as a graphic designer in California, styling matchboxes. After moving back to Chicago, Hollander worked as an art teacher and art director. She also tried her hand at illustrating children's books. It was in 1976, that Hollander's comic strip 'Sylvia' was first published in the feminist magazine The Spokeswoman. After that, 'Sylvia' was taken on by various publishers, but Hollander took syndication over herself and soon doubled its readership. By 1997, 'Sylvia' was running in over 80 daily and weekly papers. Besides 'Sylvia', Nicole Hollander also started a line of greeting cards and calendars and wrote and illustrated a number of books about cats.
