Erwin Greenwood was the original artist of the 'Navy Bob Steele' newspaper comic. Greenwood launched the comic with former U.S. Navy lieutenant Wilson Starbuck as a Sunday half-page for the McClure Syndicate in November 1939. The strip supported President Roosevelt's policy of war prepardness, and strangely enough the hero was aboard a destroyer during a rescue at the same day Pearl Harbor was bombed. Greenwood remained on the comic until 1944, when he was replaced by William King. |
