Born in Manchuria, Go U-yeong arrived in Korea after the liberation. He stayed in a refugee camp for a while, where he began working on his 'Jwidoli' comic. Ilgan Sport magazine began publishing the strip in January 1972. Go U-yeong earned most of his fame through his modern comic adaptations of classical Korean and Chinese literary works, such as 'Samgujki', 'Suhoji', 'Iljimae' and 'Hong Kil-dong'. After spending much of his career the last fifty years fighting censorship, Go U-yeong died in late May 2005.
