Jean-François Charles studied fine arts for two years before he began making caricatures. Over a period of four years, he used the pseudonym Bof, while drawing for magazines like La Libre Belgique and La Nouvelle Gazette. Next, he was present in Spirou with some 'Belles Histoires de l'Oncle Paul', and his first long story, 'Les Chevaliers du Pavé', written by Jean-Marie Brouyère and Thierry Martens (Terence). He was also present at the publishing house Averbode, where he made illustrations for juvenile publications.
In 1978 he met scenarist Jan Bucquoy, with whom he made some stories for Spatial, including 'Le Bal du Rat Mort'. This story was published in book format by Michel Deligne in 1980, and was a big success among critics. Also for Deligne, he started the historical series 'Les Pionniers du Nouveau Monde', in cooperation with his wife Maryse, in 1982. From 1991 to 1998, he worked on the series 'Fox' with writer Jean Dufaux at Glénat. Also a painter, a book featuring his paintings was published in 2001. That same year, he illustrated the third book in the 'Le Décalogue' series by Frank Giroud. He cooperated with his wife again on 'India Dreams', which was published by Casterman in 2002.
