Peter Chapman was born in North Sydney in 1925. He studied at the East Sydney National Art School, where he met Phil Belbin and studied under William Dobell, Dadswell, Harvey Dundas and Townsend. He was employed by Frank Johnson Publications, where he produced numerous titles. Chapman also worked for K.G. Murray Publishing Company and eventually became a freelance comic artist with Frew Publications, drawing among others 'The Shadow', a creation by Jeff Wilkinson. When comics declined, Peter Chapman turned to illustration, and became a designer at the John Sands Company, working on greeting cards, games and calendars. In 1973, he moved to the bush, where he built himself a house and studio. He continued to work freelance, and also took up teaching. In 2016, he died at age 91.
In 2016, he received the Ledger of Honour and was inducted in the Australian Comics Hall of Fame.
